物語は「監察醫 朝顔」のラストの翌年春から幕を開け、朝顔が母の遺體を探しに1人で東北を訪れたことによって新たな物語が紡がれていく。
彼女が東日本大震災と母の死に深く向き合うさまや、前作では描けなかった東日本大震災以外の大規模災害にも相対する姿が切り取られる。

第二季與上一季同樣描述了主人公萬木朝顏（上野樹里飾）作為法醫學者，與擔任刑警的父親萬木平（時任三郎飾）以及丈夫桑原真也（風間俊介飾）共同解決案件，探尋死者生前的足跡。同時接著上一季講述了萬木家溫暖的日常生活，但在一次機緣巧合下，朝顏替父親回到家鄉尋找母親的遺物，以此為契機，萬木家平穩的生活逐漸發生了變化……
